Formula 401: Recent New York State Decision Makes the Connection Between Water and Energy

Last Friday the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) denied a key water quality certification required for the re-licensing of the Hudson River-based Indian Point nuclear power plant.

The Great Bake Sale Debate

The regulation has caused quite a stir among New York parents. On March 18th, there was a “Bake-In” rally held at City Hall by NYC Green Schools calling for an appeal of the regulation. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and Council Member Gail Brewer were in attendance along with parents and children fighting for the bake sale cause. This regulation has also sparked a bit of debate here at our office with varying opinions on whether the regulation is achieving its goal in reducing calories or merely encouraging students to indulge in junk food.

Will the Real David Freeman Please Stand Up?

Mr. Freeman, Interim General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) arrogantly dismisses the devastating effect that power plants’ massive water withdrawals, including that of LADWP’s Scattergood plant in El Segundo, have on coastal resources.

Mr. Freeman, who Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa recently referred to as “a pioneer for the environment,” is quoted in the article saying, “I am working hard on issues that I think everyone would agree are far more important than some minor impact on the fisheries.”
