We’ve blogged once or twice about New Amsterdam before, but we could really never say enough about their mission to reinvent the indoor public market as a civic institution in the City of New York.
Their hope (and ours!) is to have a place where butchers, grocers, mongers, and other retail and wholesale purveyors can connect with the NYC public — one even more extensive (and indoors!) than the current Greenmarkets: think Pike Place Market in Seattle or La Boqueria in Barcelona.
They’re hosting what looks like a delicious benefit Saturday (tickets are available here), and they’ve also just launched an online auction.
We all know that times are tough, but if you can spare the dough, the auction items are unique and undoubtedly tasty, ranging from a mushroom CSA from Wild Food to a spring pea planting with Queens County Farm Museum’s Michael Robertson to a private barrel tasting and case of wine from Red Hook Winery.

our city so needs more access to greenmarkets. it’s even hard to believe how “excited” people get about the Union Square one which isn’t really even that big or good. i mean it does the trick, but it’s amazing how progressive new yorkers feel they are and yet we are cool w/ having so little space that serves farm-fresh, organic produce on a larger scale. i’m in brooklyn and we only have a weekned place to go to. i hope that this project goes forward!
