Word on the foodie street is that President-elect Obama is getting close to announcing a Secretary of Agriculture. In the sustainable food community, the hand-wringing continues as we wait to hear whether Obama will pick a winner or another Monsanto lackey .
Those who (however wishfully) thought that Pollan might be in the running had their hopes dashed weeks ago, when he confirmed that he wasn’t interested. Before you throw up your hands in despair, consider that Pollan is out but not down — just a few days ago, he and a number of other high-level foodies and environmentalists (including Bill McKibben, Marion Nestle, Tom Philpott, Judie Wicks, Anna Lappe and many more — click here for the list of original signers) started circulating this petition with a short list of their own.
Time is presumably of the essence, so if you are so inclined to join the cool kids in signing, you might also consider forwarding the petition to a friend or two. Here’s hoping for a Secretary of Ag who represents a change we can get behind.

I loved Pollan’s piece in the NYT Magazine, “Farmer in Chief,” detailing a radical new food policy for the US.
