One of the things I love best about the Alice Waters/Sam Levin/Turin, Italy story is that it is, weirdly, so connected to the experience many of us just had during this last election season: different generations and cultures, crossing boundaries, coming together in an inspirational moment. Let's hope the sleeping beast is awake forever. Rock on Sam Levin!

Sam has inspired me and my students at NYU. I've also been reading about the amazing work in Detroit led by Grace Lee Boggs and Detroit Summer. These are the young people we need to listen to and support and follow. What could be more hopeful than a world where we are re connected to the earth through the food we grow. My NYU students were blown away by Sam, his knowledge and influence. I also hope he will be able to connect with the wonderful Young People's Project in Jackson, Miss and Cambridge, Mass. What a wonderful challenge for this new world... every high school in the country feeding itself!! Thanks Sam for leading us all!

I'm not surprised that Sam Levin was the talk of Turin--I was lucky enough to hear him speak at the Eat-In hosted by Slow Food Nation on Labor Day and his zeal was a joy to behold. It was one of the highlights of that whole long weekend for me.

Apparently, he played the same role at Terra Madre. As Deborah Eschmeyer commented over at the Ethicurean in response to Bonnie's review of Food Fight, " The only time I felt I grew as a farmer was when I had dinner with Will Allen and the only time I felt truly inspired was when I heard Sam Levin and Vandana Shiva."

Good thing we've got kids like Sam stepping up to lead the way, along with Will Allen. Here's to singing the praises of formerly unsung heroes!
