The Consumers’ Union vs The NY Times on Genetically Modified animals

October 14th, 2008 by leslie · No Comments

The New York Times came out earlier this month in support of the FDA’s proposal to “open a pathway” for genetically modified animal products to enter the market. Needless to say, they received several letters opposing their pro-Frankenfood stance. One of these letters was from the Consumers’ Union, which is also running an online campaign (creepy photo alert!) urging consumers to take advantage of the comment period.

Destin’s friend from Australia had this reaction to the idea of eating genetically modified animals:

“The fact that I’m not allowed to give blood in my own country – ever again – because I happened to be living in the UK whilst the whole mad cow thing happened – just goes to prove that the people playing around with this stuff really don’t know what the long term consequences are…… Scary fairies (as we say down under)……”

With industry-driven science and no labeling requirements? Scary fairies, indeed.
