Happy Halloween!

Spooky! The Chinese melamine scandal has expanded to include eggs and has prompted a massive chicken cull.

Fishy! Friends at the Consumers’ Union tell us that organic standards are at risk in the seafood department. Basically, farmed fish that are fed wild fish (which sounds good, but many of these fish are from polluted environments and have unacceptable levels of mercury and PCBs) stand to keep their organic label. If you think this sounds creepy, you can take action at the CU site.

Taking Times mag to task Raj Patel calls out the NY Times Magazine, which put together that big food issue a few weeks ago. The problem? They made no mention of the elephant in the foodie room: gender. Check it out at the new Slow Food Nation blog, Civil Eats, or at RP’s blog, Stuffed and Starved.

Time-sensitive action Our friend Jill Richardson reminds us that we have until Monday (yes, this Monday, the day before the election) to tell the USDA that foods that include pesticide-riden, genetically modified (GMO) soy shouldn’t be labeled as organic.

Because sometimes they listen 85,000 letters later, the USDA has ruled that organic animals must graze. This is really great news. Read more at Chews Wise.

Good idea! A number if cities around the country (Missoula, Belmont, Mass, and more — Google your town to see if somebody’s doing it there) have organized Halloween food drives, where people are trick-or-treating for non-perishable food items in lieu of candy. Love it.
