So long, carbofuran! In what the Washington Post is calling a “surprise move,” the EPA has banned all food (both domestic and imported) with residue of carbofuran, one of the most widely used pesticides in the world. The agency says it’s doing it for the toddlers, but this has major implications for bird and bee populations, too.
Should’ve, could’ve, wouldn’t The AP (via ABC Eyewitness News) points out that tracking systems food industry groups lobbied against could have spared them much of the $250 million in lost revenue from the recent salmonella outbreak. In related news, tomato growers are seeking compensation for some of that lost revenue.
Drastic times call for shorter weeks Columbia, Louisiana’s Caldwell Parish School Board has come up with a radical solution for rising food and fuel prices — a shorter school week. The move, which could save the district up to $145,000, may please some students, but would hurt low-income families that rely on school lunch programs.
