Today’s Healthy Monday tip: Speak up!
One of the best ways to see more local sustainable food in your community is to encourage grocers, chefs, and others to source it.
I was in a local grocery store last week on a search for organic turkey. One of the employees saw me scouring the meats section and asked if she could help me find something. I told her what I was looking for and she said, “you are about the third person that asked for that product, I am going to talk to the manager right now and ask him to start buying it”. I was excited to find that others were asking and that it only took a few people to inspire this employee to take action.
Not sure what to ask? Sustainable Table offers Shopping Guides that include questions for farmers, store managers, and waiters. Check out the printable “I Care” cards to let restaurants know that you want to see them commit to providing you with sustainable and local food in their establishment.
Hopefully, as soon as restaurants and grocery stores realize that their customers are seeking local, sustainable and organic food, it will become more and more abundant.
