Feeling Revived: Eat Well Attends Great Hudson River Revival

June 26th, 2008 by chelsea · No Comments

Summer wouldn’t be the same without outdoor festivals. One of our interns, Joanna Lehrman, a recent graduate of CUNY Hunter College with a degree in Urban Planning, writes about a wonderful event put on this past weekend by The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. in Croton Point Park, along the Hudson River. Joanna’s personal interest lies in urban agricultural policy. She hopes to help in creating open spaces for urban farms and one day manage her own farm.

This weekend, a couple of us at the Eat Well Guide had the opportunity to attend the Clearwater Festival: Great Hudson River Revival and hold a table alongside other social and political activists while enjoying the weather, delicious food and some good folk music.

In addition to giving out loads of pins and stickers, we had a chance to talk to some wonderful people including New York farmers who want to be listed on the Eat Well Guide, a young girl involved in a new film called “What’s on My Plate,” and a woman from a New Jersey Juvenile Detention center who is pushing for more nutrition education and gardening programs and who uses our “I Eat Well” pins as rewards for her students.

We had the chance to spread the word about our upcoming travel tool, Eat Well Everywhere, as well as talk about how to use our website to connect folks with not only locations that provide local food options, but also groups interested in promoting a more sustainable food system. We were excited to be able to put a face to our organization and to let people know who we are.

After eating a gigantic eggplant and hummus wrap (did I mention the delicious food?), I gave a small interview with WBAI 99.5 FM who was broadcasting live from the festival while Destin made friends with some people who run a popular folk music magazine. As the sun went down, children played in the fields and Pete Seeger and other artists played music at the waterfront.

Overall, we had a fantastic day. We had a chance to get out of the office for a day and to really connect with our grassroots community. We hope to participate in many more events to come!
