NYC Event–Media that Matters 2008

May 28th, 2008 by leslie · No Comments

If you’re in New York City Wednesday or Friday night, check out the Media that Matters Film Festival. I’ll be at the premiere tomorrow at the IMC (at 7pm–get tickets here) with our friend, Kerry Trueman from Eating Liberally.

MTM is a project of Art’s Engine, a nonprofit organization that “supports, produces and distributes independent media of consequence” in an effort to engage audiences with critical social justice issues through film. Those who can’t make it to the festivals in person will be able to view the films online (you can see last year’s films right now), and can even purchase festivals (custom or pre-curated) for relatively nominal fees and organize film festivals in their towns.

We’re particularly excited that Every Third Bite, a new short about bees and the vital role they play in our ecosystems, is included in this year’s festival. Of course, MTM is no stranger to food issue advocacy films–back in 2006 they launched their FOCUS project, a series of curated collections which center on particular issues with Media that Matters: Good Food, which included The Meatrix, as well as Asparagus! (a Stalk-umentary), which has recently come available as a feature-length film.

If all those great shorts don’t sate your appetite for foodie cinema, check out the food issue films I reviewed last month for the Media Rights Shortlist series.
